On 8th October 2024, news was received of the sudden and untimely death of Consœur Maeve Lydon, GCHS who passed peacefully in the tender care of the staff of St Vincents University Hospital, Dublin with her loving husband Chevalier Don at her bedside.
Maeve was born into the Ryan Clan, “The Ryan Giants” to be precise and had a strong republican background. She trained as a Montessori Teacher, was fluent in Irish, French and Spanish, a staff member of the Revenue Commissioners, an accomplished Sailor, Cordon Bleu Cook, Dress Designer and Silversmith whose craftmanship was of the highest standard having trained at the Calderwood School of Silversmiths. Many years ago, Consœur Maeve created a beautiful ornate silver cross which she donated to the Lieutenancy. The Cross is displayed on the altar during the celebration of Holy Mass at Lieutenancy events.
Above all, Maeve was a wonderful lady of deep faith and prayer, who took care of her husband and was deeply involved in Parish and Order activities. She and Don were recipients of the Pilgrim Shell having completed numerous pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
Many of us have fond memories of her warm smile, intelligent conversation and stylish presentation whenever we were fortunate to be in her company. She was one in a million, a great character and will be greatly missed by all, but in particular by her beloved husband Don who loved her so much.
