Service Preparing the seminarians to serve in the Latin Patriarchate parishes
Script for theme of service
Voice off + images: For over a century and a half, the Knights and Dames of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre have been actively supporting the formation of diocesan priests at the heart of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, namely the Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Beit Jala, the place where the seed of vocation takes root and flourishes.
Fr. Bernard Poggi, Rector of the Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Beit Jala: The seminary of the Latin Patriarchate in Beit Jala is the oldest university in Palestine. We’re the first institution of higher learning and since its inception we have been forming priests, local clergy for the Diocese of the Latin Patriarchate which serves four countries; Jordan, Palestine, Israel, and Cyprus.
Voice Off + images: In addition to the Beit Jala Seminary, seminarians at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary of Galilee which also falls under the umbrella of the Latin Patriarchate. Established in 2008 in Domus Galilaeae, the seminary is characterized as both diocesan and missionary, where priests are formed to serve in the local Latin parishes and are also sent into missions to surrounding countries. Those who are assigned to local parishes learn about the support of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre through the projects and activities made possible thanks to the Knights and Dames’ contributions
Fr. Francesco Voltaggio, Rector of the Redemptoris Mater Seminary of Galilee: We are serving in the Latin parishes, every year of formation, because the seminarians are used to have an interruption in their studies in order to serve in the local parishes, of course in Palestine, Israel, in Jordan, and some of them also in different countries sent by of course by us and especially by the Patriarch.
Voice off + images: To better serve the parishes and communities they are assigned to, an important aspect in the formation of priests in the seminaries of the Latin Patriarchate involves the learning of local and foreign languages.
Fr. Bernard: This world is one that is multicultural, especially in Jerusalem, we have people from all over the world, so a certain amount of our formation has to do with linguistic formation, learning the different languages that people need in order to be priests in the region.
Voice off + images: The Knights and Dames of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher have also contributed to improving the experience of teaching and learning at the Seminary of Beit Jala by upgrading some of its facilities.
Fr. Bernard: In recent years there have been many upgrades and projects that have been taken on by the Knights and Dames of the Holy Sepulchre, including the library that we are in now, also the auditorium and hopefully soon the faculty of theology and philosophy where we are able to provide classes for our students.
Voice off + images: Formation in the seminaries of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is a journey through which the seminarian immerses himself in the spiritual and communal practices which are essential to Catholic priesthood. Through liturgy, prayer, teaching, and community life, the seminarians learn to live in God's presence.
