Past Grand Masters

In 1496, Pope Alexander VI created the office of Grand Master of the Order, and the office was vested in the papacy. The office of Grand Master remained vested in the papacy until 1949. Since that time, the following cardinals have held the office:

Cardinal Grand Master O'Brien

His Excellency Edwin O’Brien Motto: Pastores Dabo Vobis "I will give you shepherds" –Jeremiah 3:15.
Pope Benedict XVI on Monday 29th August 2011 named Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, 72, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
He succeeded Cardinal John Foley.  Archbishop O’Brien had served as Archbishop of Baltimore since October 1, 2007. Previously he had served as Grand Prior of the US Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy. He was elevated to the Sacred College in February 2012. 

The Order enjoys the protection of the Holy See. The Vatican Secretariat of State, in the  name of the Supreme Pontiff, approves all appointments and admissions to the Order.
